Dr. Gabriel Lubell (b. 1983) is a composer, music theorist, and astronomer. His music is driven by a deep curiosity about the world around us, and frequently draws on his background as a scientist. A collector of wonderments great and small, he has written works about diverse lifeforms, stars, ghost ships, and occasionally music itself (among other things.) As a scholar, his research focuses on issues of sound, space, and experience with a particular interest in how albums function as complete artistic works. He is in the process of developing a book about his methods, which will build on papers that discuss albums by the Beatles, Pink Floyd, and Sleater-Kinney. He holds graduate degrees in music and astronomy from Indiana University, where he currently teaches classes on popular music, music theory, and world music as a visiting lecturer of music in general studies. In addition to IU, he has held teaching positions at Knox, Macalester, and Kenyon Colleges.
